As I got older and began to like boys, one of the first things I noticed, sometimes even over personality, was their height. The same height was fine, but shorter, absolutely not.
Honestly, it was something I obsessed about, like many other girls and women in our society do. How did this notion develop in our minds that there was something wrong with dating someone who was shorter?
Does it make us seem less feminine? Does it make them feel less masculine? There, in a small, messy, dorm room, wearing a baggy t-shirt, with no makeup, a boy referred to me as his girlfriend for the first time.
I had no idea what to do or how to react, but after a few weeks, when he finally asked that crucial relationship question, I was confident in my answer: Yes to hilarious conversations, inside jokes, silly faces, cheap shared meals, and lots of adventures. Yes to it all.
Since coming to college, I have dated a few boys and with each of them, like all the rest, I judged them on their height. I would definitely date them if they were taller.
Finally, after mentioning this to my friends a number of times, they finally told me how ridiculous I was being.
They told me they would rather see me happy than with a taller guy who treated me poorly. It finally clicked that, yes I may feel awkward for a little, but that will pass: Besides height, what was really stopping me from dating something who was amazing in other ways?
So as my adventures as a sophomore in college ended, I found myself on a new adventure: Not with a guy shorter than me, but with someone who genuinely makes me laugh, who Dating a guy shorter than u me beautiful even when I look a mess, who made my lunch for work because I was tired individually wrapping the tomatoes and lettuce of courseand someone who accepts me for who I am entirely: So for anyone out there too weirded out by height reversal, scared to take the risk, or ashamed to stand next to a shorter boy, all I have to say to you is to just let go of what society has been telling girls since the beginning of time.
