The band are often considered a precursor to the new wave of British heavy metal , which re-energised heavy metal in the late s and early s. Usually a power trio , they had particular success in the early s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war , good versus evil , abuse of power , promiscuous sex , substance abuse , and, most famously, gambling , the latter theme being the focus of their hit song " Ace of Spades ". From the mids onward, however, Lemmy insisted that they were a rock and roll band. Lemmy died on 28 December from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure , after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Lemmy was dismissed from Hawkwind in May after being arrested in Canada for drug possession; he said the band dismissed him for "doing the wrong drugs". With more than tracks to choose from, we somehow managed to come up with a list of the Top 10 Motorhead Songs, shattered eardrums be damned. Its standout number, "Dancing on Your Grave," proves that not even Lemmy would let Motorhead stagnate in the speed-metal trenches. Turning adversity into opportunity, Lemmy quickly named and launched his new band with a turbo-charged re-recording of "Motorhead," and the rest, as they say, is history. One of the most underrated lyricists in rock 'n' roll gets back at his dad who walked out when Lem was just three months old on "Orgasmatron," challenging the vocabulary skills of long-haired acolytes in the process. By the mid-'80, the build-them-just-to-break-them British press had pretty much written off the band. Then came "Killed by Death," which put everyone in their place.
